Running Mad

How Fundraising Works

This page explains how fundraising works when you take on a Running Mad challenge, from picking a cause to getting the money where it needs to go.

The basic model

  1. Choose the cause you want to support.
  2. Choose a challenge and a distance that gives you a clear, specific goal.
  3. Set up a fundraising page with your charity or a recognised fundraising platform.
  4. Share the goal and the deadline with friends, family and colleagues.
  5. Log your miles and post updates as you go.
  6. Finish, thank your sponsors and claim your medal and certificate.

Set a goal people can picture

“I am going to get fitter” raises very little. “I am walking 100 miles in October” raises considerably more, because sponsors can picture it, they know when it ends, and they can see whether you did it. Pick a distance that is a genuine stretch for you rather than a token gesture.

Donations go direct to the charity

When you fundraise through your chosen charity or a fundraising platform, donations go to them directly. Your challenge entry with us is a separate purchase, which is what covers the medal, certificate and postage.

Getting more out of your campaign

  • Post progress updates rather than a single appeal at the start
  • Share a photo of the medal design you are working towards
  • Ask your employer whether they offer match funding
  • Bring colleagues in as a team and pool both mileage and sponsorship
  • Time your finish for a date that means something to your cause
